Bureaucracy: Exhibit B– the Ice Cream Shop

Important to know: just asking for a brownie sundae is not enough information to get you one of these.

JULIE [at the drive-thru]: …..and a brownie sundae.

INTERCOM [as though I’ve asked for a Serenity Surprise or something equally nonspecific]: Do you mean a Brownie Delight?

JULIE: Is that a brownie sundae?

INTERCOM: Well. It’s a warm brownie with a scoop of ice cream on top, topped with hot fudge, whipped cream and nuts.

JULIE: ….So, that’s a yes?

DAVE [leaning over]: Yes, please! A Brownie Delight!!!!

JULIE: Afraid you were gonna get a spit bomb in your sundae?

DAVE: Yes. Yes I was.

    • Julie, I am reminded of a late night dinner with you at the Happy Chef in Winona. You ordered the corn dogs. Robust waitress sternly asking you “Do you mean… the cornie dogs?” off of the children’s menu.

    • You are aware that I think of that moment every single time my kids order corn dogs, right? Every. Single. Time. (Although I thought you were the one who ordered the cornie dogs. Isn’t that funny?)

    • That’s awesome! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve relived that moment via Kate (me being the stern waitress of course) and she just looks at me like I’m slightly off center. I’m certain it was you who ordered them, because I didn’t care for corn meal bread back then, and I can still see your face staring at her wondering “Did you, with the braids, really just say that?”

    • That’s fantastic. Everyone needs a little cranky Happy Chef waitress in their lives. Do you remember telling Katie Vento (I think it was Katie Vento) that they were going to put an Indian headdress on the chef and change the name to Snappy Chief?

    • Yes! I think we called it the Snappy Chief the rest of the time I was there.
